Art and Photography Exhibition

25th May 2018

Additional information:

Southwark Schools Learning Partnership are excited to be partnering with Art Bermondsey Project Space (ABPS) on a new exhibition later this year.  ABPS have said “The development of the local area, discovering talent and creating opportunities is exactly what we are about nourishing”.

This will be a professionally mounted exhibition of students work from SSLP members, celebrating the best art students in Southwark. Schools can individually select their own entries, and their own system of doing so, (run a competition, or select work already being made) and the gallery judges will then make a final selection for the show, ensuring all schools who enter are represented. This is not a competition between schools, but a platform to celebrate all the great work across the schools. Individual students will be awarded prizes however.

Schools wishing to take part should have declared their interest by January 12th to, stating the name of their school and the likely mediums/disciplines that will be entered. There will be two separate prize categories, Art (any medium/discipline) and Photography.

Submissions of artwork will be by 25th May (details to be confirmed after expression of interest) in photographic form before being passed on for the Judges selection.

Schools will hear back from the Gallery Judges by 8th June.

Note: It may be worth considering that with external moderation dates to be confirmed, it might be best to consider work from year groups which will not be needed for selection (y10 rather than 11) or work which can be duplicated (Digital).

Aims of this exhibition opportunity:

  • breaking the correlation between economic disadvantage and achievement
  • to create a platform for the youth artistic and cultural scene that is rapidly developing in the borough of Southwark
  • to expand on the social role of art as an opportunity for personal and collective development and growth
  • to communicate to students the challenges of any artistic creation
  • to give students the opportunity to recognise their passion for art and perhaps to be educated within the contemporary art school system later in life

Art Bermondsey Project Space together with Olympus and Southwark School’s Learning Partnership would like to provide exposure for students with a passion for art/photography.

This showcase is designed to recognise and exhibit works of students with great talent and encourage them to later be educated within the contemporary art school system or simply continue creating throughout life. The competition encourages and empowers youth around the Borough of Southwark to express their desire for positive change through visual storytelling.

We promote original and exciting art works which celebrate the breadth of contemporary art practice in the area.

For the first edition of this unique partnership we are considering students working in visual mediums including sculpture, painting, photography, drawing, textiles, ceramics, installation, animation and video.

All entries will be reviewed by an esteemed panel of industry judges, who will select students work from each school, where shortlisted artists will exhibit at the Art Bermondsey Project Space in June.

The selection panel will look for young artists who are open and willing to try something new, creating work that stands out.

As well as the prize of exhibiting at this fantastic space, there will also be camera prizes from Olympus, and the opportunity to take part in Art/Photography workshops with professionals in the industry.

There will be a Private view, and a professional catalogue produced for the exhibition.
