Student Voice

One of the key aims of SSLP is to harness student voice by offering our young people a chance to interact, develop their teamwork, communication and leadership skills. We want our young people to influence the work of SSLP.

As such, we are proposing to create an annual publication with contributions from students in schools across SSLP focusing on an issue chosen by students and relevant to them.

The idea is to have a publication, possibly entitled The State of Our Generation, which reflects a diversity of opinion and experience on a given issue across the area, acting as a resource to use both within and between our schools.

How will this work?

  • Each school is to select an independent-minded, self-sufficient student from Year 8, Year 10 and Year 12 (for those with a Sixth Form).
  • Students from across SSLP schools will meet on 19th January for an induction into SSLP. The name, focus and format of the publication will be decided and tasks will be allocated to schools.
  • Students will meet again on 2nd February, 23rd March and 27th April to present and review ideas, articles and features.
  • In May the publication will be ready for distribution across schools, and to community leaders.
  • SSLP Student Voice meetings will happen on Saturdays at a host school to minimise the impact on staffing.
  • Students will need to gain parental permission to travel to the designated host school where a teacher will be hosting the SSLP Student Voice meetings.
  • The publication can be used in a variety of ways, for example in tutor time or in PSHEE. It can also be distributed to parents and community leaders.
  • Ideally, we would love this work to culminate in a conference where students present their views, thoughts and findings on the chosen topic to local officials and politicians.

Possible topics to focus on include:

  • Gender
  • Brexit
  • Mental health
  • Post-16 options/university access
  • Gang violence
  • Social media
  • Environmental issues
