1619: A World of Ideas – Andy Skinnard (Philosophy)

“Knowledge is power.” This phrase is attributed to Francis Bacon who, as Lord Chancellor, signed the letters patent to set up Edward Alleyn’s original school. More celebrated now for his thoughts on the scientific method, Bacon’s work, alongside the thinking of two other seekers of certainty – Thomas Hobbes and Rene Descartes – formed a massive backdrop for the world of ideas that flourished during the seventeenth century.
