Earlier this week two of our students had a conversation with conductor Neil Thomson. He was live from his hotel in Brazil where he is currently Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Goias Philharmonic Orchestra. They talked about his work and his enduring relationship with Beethoven’s music. Yesterday our GCSE music students explored Beethoven’s Pathetique Sonata in depth with a live-streamed workshop from Dulwich College. Next week we are looking for an SSLP student to chat with Afrikan Boy (AB), a successful Grime recording artist from southeast London. He will be Thinking About how his journey so far has been impacted by his Nigerian Heritage.

Welcome Back to the SSLP 2020-21

Our launch on September 15th was a little different this year, as we staged it virtually using Zoom but we were delighted to welcome 90 staff members from 12 SSLP schools.

We opened proceedings with the first broadcast of the SSLP Annual Review film featuring our Virtual SSLP Orchestra. Three of our students shared their experiences of SSLP and we looked forward to forthcoming events (see below). After the formal event we had the opportunity for teachers to network in subject specific groups. Inspiring more ideas for partnership work this year.

In response to the Coronavirus outbreak the SSLP with Dulwich College organised a series of eight virtual Thinking About… talks. We’ve had artists Jeremy Deller and Lisa Milroyphysicistschemists and historians; talks on linguistics and of life as a refugee. We finish of the series Thinking About 100 years of Columbian Solitude

To date there have been 480 attendances at our Thinking About… talks, with representatives from Alleyn’s, Ark Evelyn Grace Academy, The Charter School North Dulwich, City Heights E-ACT Academy, Dulwich College, Elmgreen, JAGS, Kingsdale Foundation School, Queen’s College London, St Saviour’s St Olave’s, St Thomas Apostle College, St Michael’s Catholic College and Westminster City School. Join us for our final talk and Q&A Thinking About… Columbia on Tuesday 30th June, 4pm.

Refugee Week 2020 runs from the 15th to the 21st June and here at the SSLP we will be building on the things we have seen and heard over the week with an extended Thinking About… on Tuesday 23rd, 4pm. Connie Abbe, performer and campaigner, will speak about her experiences in South Sudan and will comment on a pre-recorded interview with fellow performer Emmanuel Jal.
