Thinking About… Setting up a sustainable business with Anna Brightman

Tuesday 15th November, 5pm – Zoom
Anna was 22 when she launched UpCircle, the brand that’s grown to become the UK’s #1 upcycled beauty brand – in just six years!

When they discovered that more than 500,000 tonnes of coffee grounds that are consumed each year in the UK alone are sent to landfill, Anna and her brother Will decided to start collecting coffee from cafes across London and transforming them into skincare products.

Now stocked in over 40 countries, UpCircle have had to move office twice in 2022 to accommodate their rapidly growing team. Their upcycled ingredient portfolio is also growing – upcycled raspberry seeds, rose petals, hibiscus acids and oat powder are now all being rescued for their next product launches. UpCircle have extended the circular approach that they take to their ingredients to packaging too and have now refilled 20,000 pieces of packaging via their “Return, Refill, Reuse” scheme.

Thinking About… The Green Economy
with Dharshini David

Tuesday 21st June, 5pm – Zoom
We know that we need to reach net zero to avoid ecological and economic disaster – but how do we get there?

And it’s economics and geography that hold the answers.

Thinking About… Reggaetón and the rise of Spanish-language music; a darker side to Despacito?
with Rebecca Blacknell

Tuesday 24th May, 5pm – Zoom
Justin Bieber, on hearing the original version of Despacito in a Medellín nightclub, may or may not have been fully aware of what the song meant, or what releasing his own remix would mean for the 2017 music scene and Spanish-language music thereafter. Despacito was the first song primarily in Spanish to top the Billboard Hot 100 since Macarena in 1996. It may not have an accompanying dance routine, but it does provide a starting point for discussing a common theme of reggaetón music: machismo, or sexism.

This talk explored the evolution of themes in reggaetón, putting its machismo in the context of politics and gender-based violence in modern-day Latin America.

Rebecca spoke with Aleksa and Angelina from QCL.

After Nick spoke he introduced a surprise guest, the writer and creator of It’s A Sin – Russell T Davies OBE. Both special guests answered questions from Arjaan, Archie, Brooke, Leah and Matthew from Dulwich College and Sydenham High.

Alex Renton is a campaigning journalist working on poverty, the environment, food culture and food poverty. He has won awards for investigative journalism, war reporting and food writing.

Alex’s book Blood Legacy, published in May 2021, is a reckoning of his family’s story of slavery. He asks whether the British who benefited from slavery can acknowledge the ongoing consequences. You can read why Alex wrote Blood Legacy and find out about his family’s reparative actions in this piece from The Times.

‘Moving and deeply researched, Alex Renton’s account of his ancestors’ slaveholding brings home the everyday brutality of Caribbean slavery and its contribution to the making of Britain both then and since. Blood Legacy sets the ordinariness of slaveholding in the eighteenth century monied world alongside accounts of the extraordinary lives of some of those they owned. This is a book that asks white Britons to look hard at our past and its consequences in the present.’ Professor Diana Paton, Edinburgh University

When Peter Hain was 19 he became chairman of the Stop The Seventy Tour campaign which disrupted tours by the South African rugby union and cricket teams in 1969 and 1970. In 1972 a private prosecution resulted in Hain’s conviction for criminal conspiracy at the Old Bailey for which he was fined £200. The prosecution was funded largely from apartheid-supporting whites in South Africa due to his campaign against white-only South African sports tours. He was acquitted of three other conspiracy counts after defending himself in the four week trial.
