Neurodiversity Conference

Wednesday 22nd November 2023, 9am – 4pm

Kingswood Arts, Seeley Drive SE21 8QN

SSLP Schools are invited to bring five Year 10 students to this conference on Neurodoversity.

Attendees will learn what Neurodiversity means, and hear first-hand from neurodiverse people about their experiences at school. We hope to also have some musical performances.

Our keynote speaker will be Robyn Steward, presenter of BBC Podcast 1800 seconds on Autism. Robyn will share her personal experience and share some top tips.

Together students will make outline plans for four projects. The projects will continue through out the Spring term and will be showcased back to schools at a follow-up event on Wednesday 8th May.

The four projects will be:

  • Create a guide to support students transitioning from Primary to Secondary School. Could include an SSLP video, top-tips and a list of things each school should include (for example, map, timetable etc)
  • Publish a collection of written words about, by or inspired by Neurodiversity. Could be essays, poems, short stories, news articles etc – electronic or print.
  • Hold a fundraising event or activity for a charity supporting young neurodiverse people of your choice.
  • Run an art competition to raise awareness of neurodiversity in SSLP schools, and to encourage schools to be more neuro-friendly. For example a poster competition.

Each project will have a budget of £400, and must be open to all SSLP schools for equal participation.

Neurodiversity Projects

During the spring term students will meet up to once per week via Zoom to develop and finish their projects. A member of staff will be available to the students for help and advise each week, but the work will be directed by the students.

Neurodiversity Project Launch

Wednesday 8th May 2024

An opportunity for the students to launch their projects to an audience from all the schools and invited guests.
