Alleyn’s School, The Charter School East Dulwich and Kingsdale Foundation School

What we did
We wanted to highlight real-life experiences of racism that had been experienced by members of the SSLP community.
We decided to interview teachers from our schools because they could tell us about racism they experienced at school when they were students and also give their perspective on how things have changed in schools today.
How we did it
As a group we explored the journalistic technique of asking open questions using the six Ws (Who, What, Where, When, Why and hoW). We came up with lots of questions in three main areas for each of our interviewees:
- Identity questions – Where did you grow up? How do you identify yourself in terms of racial identity?
- Experience questions – When did you first experience racism? What were your experiences of racism in the classroom?
- Observation questions – Why is it different for students today? Who can make a difference to racism in the community today?
We filmed the interviews separately and then edited them together. We used a ‘long-stare’ technique to make the subjects more personal. The third school worked on the lesson plan.
