SSLP Anti – Racism Project
Don’t let your school miss out on our partnership project to tackle racism for SSLP students. We launch on Wednesday 25th November with a conference for staff and students. Keynote speaker Ndubuisi Uchea will talk about how he found his voice with Word on the Curb and will encourage the student participants to find their voice via film with the help of expert film maker Laurence Lee and the guidance of Young Citizens.
Teachers will explore racism in education with the help of Prof William Henry, Ankhara Lloyd and Carol Murraine – all very experienced in the field.

This week we were delighted to welcome not one but two guest speakers to take the Thinking About stage. Megan Smith from the Carbon Trust, and Dijana Vlaisavljevic from Sonnedix were interviewed by Tom and Sher from Kingsdale Foundation School. They introduced us to Off-Shore Wind and Solar power generation and painted an exciting picture of the quickly evolving renewable energy industry. Our Thinking About webinar this week was Lord Peter Hain thinking about sport and apartheid in South Africa. He spoke about how at the age of 19 he became chairman of the Stop The Seventy Tour campaign which disrupted the all-white South African cricket and rugby union teams’ tours in protest against apartheid.  Lord Hain mentioned the importance of young people speaking up for what they believe in, from Suffragettes to Black Lives Matter and Climate Change, and he urged students to work hard in order to achieve their goals.

In a term where schools are managing bubbles, quarantine and catch-up studies there hasn’t been much capacity for extra-curricula activities. But by working in partnership we have taken what spare resources we have had and put them together to deliver a fantastic offering.

Earlier this week two of our students had a conversation with conductor Neil Thomson. He was live from his hotel in Brazil where he is currently Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Goias Philharmonic Orchestra. They talked about his work and his enduring relationship with Beethoven’s music. Yesterday our GCSE music students explored Beethoven’s Pathetique Sonata in depth with a live-streamed workshop from Dulwich College. Next week we are looking for an SSLP student to chat with Afrikan Boy (AB), a successful Grime recording artist from southeast London. He will be Thinking About how his journey so far has been impacted by his Nigerian Heritage.

Next week the SSLP will be all about the Arts. We will host two online lectures celebrating 250 years since the birth of Beethoven – the first is Thinking About… Beethoven on Tuesday which is open to all, and the second is the Pathetique Sonata on Thursday which is aimed at GCSE music students. It is also the week to register your interest in the SSLPs Photography Competition.
