Make Racism History

Ark Evelyn Grace Academy, Dulwich College and the Elmgreen School.

What we did

We wanted to talk about decolonising the curriculum. We had some real life experiences that we wanted to share and to explain how the teaching of lessons based on white supremacy creates institutional racism that has very real consequences for our communities.

We decided to focus on a history lesson which would give all the characters a chance to voice their opinions.

How we did it

Our film had to be very tightly scripted because we would be filming individually. One school drafted a basic script and then the other two schools fleshed out the real-life experiences and examples of alternative learning.

We cast the students two from each school and are very grateful to Mr Lee for acting the role of teacher, none of our teachers are like this teacher!

Due to coronavirus restrictions we decided to make this a zoom lesson. We each filmed the script at home, looking directly in to the camera phone, it was really hard to get the timings right. Then we edited all of the video tracks together so that it looks like we could see each other.
