KS3 Song Writing Workshop

On Tuesday 16th May, The Charter School North Dulwich hosted six SSLP schools for a song-writing workshop. In total there were eight bands from key stage 3, some had been working together for a while whilst others were newly formed. The bands divided into three rooms where they were supported by four musical professionals – James, Lee, Sophie and Steve – who rotated around rooms giving advice on bass, drums, guitar and vocal. Bands who are already experimenting with their own material had the chance to develop their ideas, whilst others worked on bringing their own unique interpretation to classics.

After lunch in the sun each band chose to perform something that they had been working on. Westminster City School performed Isn’t She Lovely, Alleyn’s School played Long Train Running, JAGS gave a rendition of Sweet Child O’ Mine and The Charter School East Dulwich played their own song called Freedom or Pain. Dulwich College also played Sweet Child O Mine, a second band from Alleyn’s School the performed their own unnamed song, The Charter School North Dulwich gave a rendition of Star Man and the final band from Alleyn’s treated us to their own song Ghost in My Guitar.

B-B-B-Beethoven

Following the success of the Summer Term instrumental project, our celebration of Ludwig van Beethoven’s 250th anniversary is rounded off with a fun and inclusive collaboration – through singing! We have called it B-B-B-Beethoven! Using the famous theme of the first movement of his 5th Symphony – a theme that is generated from a motivic cell of just four notes – KS3/KS4/KS5 classes, school choirs (and even teachers!) have an opportunity to contribute tracks to B-B-B-Beethoven which will be combined to create a musical montage, rather like a musical meme.

You can choose the level of engagement to suit you, from learning to play the piece alone to a collaborative recording combining pupils from all SSLP schools!

Sheet music has been prepared for all instruments and different levels of experience have also be catered for.

On Friday 15 November, 95 singers from four SSLP schools met at JAGS Community Music Centre for a Gospel Choir Workshop with professional gospel singer Lena Wright and accompanist Abe Hampton. In just over half an hour, all singers were performing like a unified gospel choir, lapping up Lena’s effective techniques for generating the harmonies. Groups from Kingsdale Foundation School, St Saviour’s & St Olave’s, JAGS and Dulwich College also sang their own songs, all of which was presented to an excited audience of parents, teachers and friends at the end.
