Shadow

Queen’s College London, St Michael’s Catholic College and Westminster City School

What we did

Our idea was to show that different people can witness or remember things in different ways, so we decided to portray a racist incident from different perspectives.

We also wanted to show that small micro-aggressions, banter and gossip could lead to much larger incidents of hate crimes if left to go unchecked.

A final factor was to show that being racially bullied can strip you of your identity, confidence and self-belief – you become a Shadow of your true self.

How we did it

We storyboarded the rough outline of the full film together and then one school wrote the first draft script. From here each school took a character and scripted more of the scenes.

We tried to spread the parts evenly across the schools but it wasn’t always easy to film as some of the conversations are happening between people in different schools. We had to agree in advance what type of background we would have so it looks like they are sat together.

Once we had all the characters filmed we could edit the scenes together using the script. We used dramtic music to give more atmosphere to the scenes.
