Since our last newsletter we have been Thinking About Activism for Climate Change with author Anthea Simmons and Thinking About Sustainable Fashion with Professor Richard Blackburn hosted by students from Dulwich College and St Saviour’s & St Olave’s school.
CONNECTING STUDENTS
On Thursday last week our SSLP Ambassadors hosted a Sustainability Conference at 15Hatfields. They welcomed speakers from OddBox and London Wildlife Trust and worked with facilitators from Young Citizens to choose projects that will bring about change for Food Waste and Fashion.
CONNECTING STAFF
Counsellors from SSLP schools met virtually last Thursday for their half termly catch-up sharing good practice and useful links.

This week we have been Thinking About… Setting Up A Sustainable Business with Anna Brightman from UpCircle and students from JAGS, we had 44 teachers join the Aspiring Pastoral Leaders programme and we’ve begun connecting Oxbridge Applicants with mock interviewers from other schools.
Yesterday was a particularly uplifting day when Kingsdale Foundation School hosted over 200 students for our Gospel Choir Workshop, which featured materials produced by a teacher from Compass School, was led by a teacher from Westminster City School, had sessions supported by teachers from Dulwich College and St Saviour’s & St Olave’s and was coordinated by a teacher from JAGS – that’s what we call partnership! The students learnt about posture and breathing, practiced part singing and took part in a final performance including seven soloists from as many schools.

Chaos Symposium
SSLP Oxbridge applicants were invited to Dulwich College yesterday to join the Chaos Symposium. We were welcomed with croissants and then heard from Dr Mike Martin, an expert on modern warfare before taking part in two elective seminars (from a choice of 30 different topics). We re-grouped before lunch to hear from Anil Seth, Professor of Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience.
“My daughter attended and she came back enthused and inspired. She got so much out of the day and it has made her even more excited about her university applications.”

CONNECTING STUDENTS
This month we will be bringing students together on two occassions. Our Sustainability Conference hosted by SSLP Student Ambassadors takes place on Thursday 24th November at 15Hatfields. Five students per school will hear from guest speakers before identifying projects to make real changes. Before this, on Thursday 17th November, 250 singers will attend a Gospel Choir Workshop at Kingsdale Foundation School.
CONNECTING STAFF
Our four-part professional development series for staff begins on Wednesday 18th November. Sixty-one aspiring and experienced pastoral leaders have already registered for the programme which will feature three twilight guest speakers via zoom this winter, finishing with a physical event in May.
CONNECTING SCHOOLS
The Thinking About programme will continue with three more webinars this month. These are suitable for students in Year10+, staff and families. We will cover Setting up a sustainable business, Activisim for Climate Change and Sustainable Fashion.

Baroness Floella Benjamin was a tremendous hit with students from four SSLP schools when she visited Dulwich College on Tuesday this week for a live Thinking About. Floella told us about her early childhood in Trinidad and the adjustments she had to make when her family emigrated to the “Motherland”, England. She left us with the message to keep smiling and to be leaders of positive change.

On Wednesday our SSLP Links teachers met online to hear from Justin Dillon, the President of the National Association of Environmental Education (NAEE). He shared with us their Manifesto and other sources of good practice. Our Links also discussed the Student Voice: Sustainability project and ideas for the November Conference.

Later today we are expecting 9 staff members from SSLP schools to gather at City Heights for specific training on how to support students Bring About Change, especially relating to community action projects.

So You Want To Be… An Engineer
Molly Dalton, a civil engineer with Balfour Beatty, joined us yesterday in two lunchtime sessions describing what it is like to be an engineer. She was hosted by Alex & Esme in session 1, and by Carlotta & Sofia in session 2 – all students at JAGS. Eight schools joined the webinars, bringing over 200 students.
Thinking About… Another Way
Amy Bray took a break from her Marine Biology degree to join us on Tuesday evening to talk about the steps we can all take to reduce our impact on the planet. Alex and Isaac from South Bank University Academy asked questions, having already introduced Meat Free Thursdays at their school.
Oxbridge Support: Teacher Training
Thank you to both Oxford and Cambridge universities for supporting SSLP teachers this week. We are now better able to prepare the expected 100 Oxbridge hopefuls when they apply later this month.
