What we did
We wanted to focus on microaggressions and banter which is why we called our film It’s Not Funny. We had the idea to use body paint and other graphics to show that ‘jokes’ could leave a lasting mark on our emotions even if no physical attack has taken place.
We wanted to cover as many different examples as possible whilst demonstrating that we are all part of the problem – and therefore part of the solution too.
How we did it
Because we didn’t want to make a long film that was very repetitive we decided that each school would take a different question and make a very short film to demonstrate it.
- Can people in authority be racist?
- Can our friends be racist?
- Are only white people racist?
- Does history make us racist?
Our lesson plan follows the same pattern. The class are asked one of the questions, then watch the video before conducting a short exercise.
