SUSTAINABILITY
Our focus on Sustainability concluded on Tuesday with a field trip to Woodlands Farm Trust. Fourteen year 9 & 10 students meet Bob the Shetland pony, pigs, chickens and sheep on a farm tour before learning to read maps and orienteer themselves around the farm. In the afternoon they had to navigate to eight checkpoints to answer questions about sustainability and conservation using field skills such as pond dipping. Linking nicely with next year’s focus on neurodiversity all the students participating have a learning difference. Verbal feedback said the day was “better than playing FIFA!”

STAINED GLASS VISIT & WORKSHOP
Last Friday twelve students had an early morning tour of Westminster Abbey; from the remains of the Romanesque Abbey, past the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior and the Shrine to Edward the Confessor ending in the main church looking at Hockey’s exuberant contribution to the Abbey’s stained glass collection. Sophie Hacker talked about the craft of stained glass design and making. They then worked in groups to respond to the artwork, exploring abstract and organic shapes, as well as the 18 SSLP school logos.

This week ImpactEd have been holding online Focus Groups with students, staff and school leaders. These conversations are an important part of evaluating our impact and making what we do even better. We are hoping to hear from as many people as possible, so if you’ve been involved with the SSLP this year please have your say by completing the Staff feedback Form or
Student Feedback Form.

Whilst we’ve been reflecting, our students have been looking forward to consider the Future of Chemical Engineering with AI. Dr Dmitry Lapshin spoke to students from three SSLP schools about the huge potential in this area of science. Students were introduced to The ENSAMBLE project by this year’s alumni before a workshop gave a taste of the potential research students can participate in.

Our Student Voice project concluded on Wednesday when almost 70 students from 12 schools came together in a hall in Herne Hill. Four inter-school teams presented the initiatives that they have been collaborating on for the last six months. We learnt about Food Banks, Recycling, Sustainable Cookery and finding ways to give our old stuff a new life. We were treated to vegan brownies, watched videos and took part in a Kahoot Quiz. Our panel of judges were very impressed and we hope to see the ideas adopted by many schools.
